Introduction

For nearly a century, South Indian Bank has built its reputation on trust and long-lasting customer relationships. With more than 900 branches across India, its physical network continues to play a vital role in delivering the brand experience, even as customer behaviour rapidly evolves.

South Indian Bank partnered with Bblewrap to create a unified branch and ATM experience that reflects the bank’s relationship-driven philosophy while responding to the expectations of today’s customers. The objective was to develop an experience system that could be consistently implemented across the bank’s diverse branch network without compromising flexibility or operational practicality.

The  Challenge

As customer expectations evolved South Indian Bank needed to bring its relationship-first philosophy into a more contemporary physical experience while maintaining consistency across a diverse branch network.

1. Evolving expectations: Customers were seeking simpler faster and more intuitive banking experiences.

2. Diverse environments: Different branch formats and regional contexts made standardisation difficult.

3. Consistency with flexibility: The experience needed to feel cohesive while adapting to each branch’s context.

4. Scalable implementation: The system needed to be clear, repeatable and practical to implement across the network.

The objective

The ambition was to turn the physical branch from a purely functional space into an experience that feels more intuitive more welcoming and more connected to the customer. This meant creating a unified experience across key customer touch points while giving the brand the flexibility to adapt to different branch contexts.

Research & Discovery

The project followed BRED™ (Bblewrap’s Rational & Emotional Design) end-to-end strategic design methodology. It helped us understand the organisation, its customers and service ecosystem before translating these insights into a structured experience strategy and scalable system.
We studied South Indian Bank's business direction, brand strategy and internal initiatives to understand its ambitions and the role the physical network needed to play. This helped us identify how the relationship-first philosophy could translate from a brand belief into an experience.
We explored customer expectations, behaviours, psychology and journeys to understand what people need at different moments of their banking experience. This helped reveal the functional and emotional needs that influence how customers navigate, interact and make decisions within a branch.

Strategic Insight

As banking becomes increasingly convenient and transactional, trust and emotional relevance become stronger sources of differentiation. For South Indian Bank the opportunity was to make its relationship-first philosophy more visible, tangible and relevant within the physical experience.

Experience Strategy

We reimagined the branch as a sequence of connected customer experiences rather than a collection of functional spaces.

Every space was evaluated through four questions:
1. What is the customer trying to achieve?

2. What are they experiencing emotionally?

3. What should they feel afterwards?

4. How can the environment support that experience?

Emotional Experience Zoning

Each area was mapped against customer mindset emotional condition expectations desired emotional outcome service interaction and environmental response. This led to Emotional Experience Zoning where different areas respond to different customer needs while remaining connected by one relationship-led experience.

Strategic Concept: with you

Out of that filtering came a single idea, small enough to say in two words and large enough to hold the entire strategy: 'With You'.

With You isn't a single design applied everywhere the same way. Each zone of the branch carries its own variation. The version a customer meets at the door isn't the version they meet in a private consultation room, but every version answers to the same idea underneath it.

From Strategy to Experience Identity

To arrive at the final solution, multiple creative directions were explored and evaluated against the experience strategy. Each concept was reviewed collaboratively with stakeholders to assess how effectively it expressed the intended customer experience while remaining aligned with South Indian Bank’s brand. The selected direction was then refined into a comprehensive experience identity system.

Strategic use variation

What makes With You work as a system, and not just a motif, is how little it depends on any one space to make sense. The same idea can sit inside any part of the branch, or beyond it, because its supporting language isn't fixed either. Each time, it's drawn from what we understand about the customer's needs and pain points in that specific space, then shaped to answer them directly.

Branch Experience Design

The experience identity system was implemented throughout the branch environment.

Environmental graphics, customer communication, navigation and spatial branding were designed together to create a seamless experience from entry to exit.

Every interaction was developed to reinforce the overall experience strategy, ensuring that branding, space and customer interactions worked together as one integrated system.

ATM Experience Design

For many customers, the ATM is their most frequent physical interaction with the bank.

The same experience strategy and identity system were therefore extended to the ATM environment.

Rather than treating the ATM as a separate branding exercise, it became another expression of the overall customer experience, maintaining consistency in communication, visual language and brand behaviour across every physical interaction.

Pilot Implementation

Before preparing the system for wider rollout, the complete experience framework was implemented as a pilot branch in Kochi.

The pilot enabled the experience to be evaluated in a live banking environment, allowing observations on customer interactions, operational practicality and implementation quality.

Insights from the pilot informed refinements to the system before expansion to additional locations.

The experience system is now being implemented across further branches, including the Powai branch, demonstrating its adaptability across different environments.

Governance & Implementation Framework

To support long-term adoption across the branch network, a comprehensive governance framework was developed.
The framework documents:
This enables internal teams and implementation partners to deliver a consistent customer experience while accommodating different branch formats and operational requirements.

Outcome

The project established a structured experience system that connects organisational intent with customer experience.

By studying the bank’s business direction, existing brand strategy, customer psychology, customer behaviour, service ecosystem and operational realities through the BRED methodology, Bblewrap developed an experience strategy that was translated into emotional experience zones, a unified experience identity system and scalable implementation guidelines.

The result is a repeatable framework that enables South Indian Bank to deliver a more consistent, relationship-driven experience across its growing branch network. This marked a shift in orientation, from a technology-centric model of banking to a human-centric one, and this insight extended directly into strategy.

Impact

Meaningful customer experiences are not created through design alone. They emerge from a deep understanding of the organisation, its customers and the experiences it seeks to create.

Using the BRED methodology, Bblewrap transformed strategic understanding into a scalable experience system that connects customer psychology, environmental design and brand expression into one cohesive framework.

The outcome is a scalable experience architecture that enables South Indian Bank to deliver a consistent, human-centred banking experience across its nationwide network.
